The Crypt - Jonas Saul I tried this book because it was free on Amazon.

I can't understand why the reviews of this book are as high as they are.

I found the main character annoying and unbelievable. A 22 year old girl shooting so many people with impunity, try it, go to any city and fire a gun once, i will bet there will be a reaction from police and passers by, but not for this character, she leaves a trail of maimed characters behind her, and there is no response from anyone.

She takes on and beats multiple professional men simultaneously. Sorry I just don't buy it.

The messages from her dead sister seem more like an email than a message from the afterlife.

I guess I am not the target audience for this, but I'm no sure who is. The story is childish, but there is too much violence and swearing to be aimed at children.

I confess, I gave up half way through, I just didn't want to waste any more time on it when there are so many better books to read.
The Demolished Man - Alfred Bester While i liked the book in general, i was a bit disappointed with the idea that Reich was a galactic focal point. I have no idea here that came from.

All of the mountain of evidence that Powell committed murder was not enough to convict him but just the say so of Powell was enough to have him demolished because of that focal point thingy.

It seemed to come out of nowhere, or did i miss something?
The Road - Cormac McCarthy It's always a bit difficult to give a bad review of a book that everyone else seems to love, but the idea of reviews is to give your honest opinion.

My honest opinion is "I couldn't finish it because it bored me."

I like to read a story but this isn't a story. It's more like poetry and I don't really like most poetry.

I would be interested to know if people who did love it, loved it for the story or the prose?
All Clear - Connie Willis The two books together are about 1200 pages.

About a two thirds could be taken out without losing anything from the story. If it had been 400 pages I would probably give it 4 stars.

I found myself skipping quite large sections where absolutely nothing seemed to happen, and in doing so probably missed some of the story.

In the end though it was a good story, just hard to find within the mountain of trivia.

Blackout - Connie Willis A good idea ruined by hundreds of pages of mind numbing trivia. Does anyone really want to read so many pages about obtaining a black skirt or tying a parcel, and those awful kids, why go on about them so much when they contribute nothing to the story, after a while i found myself skipping ever page where I saw their names.

All of the main characters were completely useless, and I don't believe they would really be allowed to time travel to the blitz without a responsible adult to look after them.

Then after reading this very long book about very little, I discover that is is only half the book and the second one is even longer.

On one hand I like the idea of the story and want to see how it turns out, but on the other I don't want to wade through the irrelevant trivia.

The Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Atwood I liked the story but hated the writing.

I did finish the book but it was hard work. I'm sure I missed some of the story, because I found myself skipping page after page of OfFred's musings, and possibly within these pages there was the odd paragraph that moved the story forward.

I would have been happier if the book explained properly how the state arose, how it ended and what the underground actually did, except have a password to identify each other.

I suppose because it was all from OfFred's perspective, and she didn't know anything.
